ACCOMODATION TYPOLOGY
You have several options for housing in Lugano. You can choose to live alone in an apartment or you can opt for a shared solution with 2 or more people. The choice will depend mainly on your budget. A single-occupancy apartment will have an average monthly cost of about 700 to 1,000 francs. If you decide to share the apartment, expenses will be cut in half, and the budget range will be around 400-600 francs per month.
The location of the apartment is an important factor that will affect your budget. You can find apartments in the center of Lugano (which tend to be more expensive) or in the surrounding areas, which we recommend as more convenient. It is important to note that Lugano has an excellent public transportation system that will allow you to easily reach the Campus, even if you choose an apartment outside the center.
Alternatively, you also have the option of considering the Mendrisio/Chiasso areas or even staying in Italy, close to the border. Shared apartments in Italy have an average cost of about 300-400 francs per month.
COST OF LIVING
To live in Lugano, students should calculate an approximate monthly expense of between CHF 1,300 and CHF 1,900.
This estimate takes into account the average monthly cost of the following items:
- Housing: The monthly rent for a single, shared room or studio apartment generally ranges from CHF 450 to CHF 1,000.
- Food: It is advisable to budget about CHF 450 per month for food. However, this amount may vary depending on one’s eating habits and lifestyle. You can do your grocery shopping at Denner and Lidl where prices are really good.
- Public transportation: A monthly expense of approximately CHF 50-100 should be considered for the use of public transportation. Lugano offers an efficient public transportation system, making it easy to move around the area.
- Various expenses: It is advisable to budget about CHF 200 per month for miscellaneous expenses, such as utilities, telephone, internet and other daily necessities.

How to reach us from major cities:
- Milan: the city is only 70 kilometers away from Lugano. It is possible to reach Lugano from Milan by train in about an hour. There are regular connections between the two cities, making it easy and convenient to travel between them.
- Paris: the best option to reach Lugano is to take a flight to Milan Malpensa airport. From the airport, you can continue by train to Lugano. The total journey takes about 2-3 hours, according to the waiting time for the connection.
- Marseille: the most convenient way to reach Lugano from Marseille is to take a flight to Milan Malpensa airport and then continue by train to Lugano.
The flight from Marseille to Milan Malpensa takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The total travel time, including the train ride from Milan Malpensa to Lugano, can take about 4-5 hours, depending on the waiting time for the connection. - Bruxelles: to reach Lugano from Brussels, you can take a flight to Milan Malpensa airport and then continue by train to Lugano. The direct flight from Brussels to Milan Malpensa takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The total travel time, including considering the train ride from Milan Malpensa to Lugano, can take about 4-5 hours, depending on the waiting time for the connection.
